Psychosocial RecoveryCoach

Questions and Answers

psychosocialrecoverycoach.com.au is a free, independent service that connects people on the NDIS with registered providers of psychosocial recovery coaching. Here are the questions people ask most, about recovery coaching and about how we work. Our guides go into each topic in more depth.

About Recovery Coaching

What is a psychosocial recovery coach?

An NDIS-funded worker with mental health knowledge who works with participants who have a psychosocial disability. They help you build capacity and resilience, find, plan and organise supports, and stay connected with them through harder times.

Is a recovery coach a counsellor?

No. Recovery coaches don't diagnose or treat mental illness. They help with planning, coordinating supports and building skills, and can help you stay connected with your GP or mental health service.

How is recovery coaching funded?

From the capacity building budget of an NDIS plan. The NDIA generally funds it for people with psychosocial support needs, and works out the hours with you.

How much does a recovery coach cost?

Under the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27, the most a provider can charge is $110.44 an hour on weekdays during the day in most of Australia. It's paid from your plan, not by you.

What's the difference between a recovery coach and a support coordinator?

Both help you use your plan. A recovery coach is specifically for psychosocial disability, with mental health qualifications or experience. The NDIA recommends a recovery coach on its own for most people with psychosocial disability.

Using This Service

What does this service do?

We connect NDIS participants, families and support coordinators with registered providers of psychosocial recovery coaching. You answer a few questions, we pass your details to one suitable provider, and they contact you.

Does it cost anything?

No. It's free for you. Providers pay us for introductions, which is how we keep it free. It doesn't change what's charged to your plan, which is capped by the NDIS price limits.

Are you part of the NDIS?

No. We're an independent service. We're not part of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) or the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and we don't employ recovery coaches.

Are you a crisis or mental health service?

No. If you need support right now, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636 or 13YARN on 13 92 76. If life is in danger, call 000.

How soon will someone contact me?

It depends on the provider. We only pass your details to providers who may have a coach with capacity, and we follow up to check you were contacted. If you haven't heard back, email us and we'll chase it.

Do you cover my area?

We take enquiries from every state and territory, for in-person and online recovery coaching. Put your postcode in the form.

Can I use this if recovery coaching isn't in my plan yet?

Yes, tell us where things are at. Providers are paid from recovery coaching funding in the plan, so we'll also point you to how to get it included.

Your Details

Who sees my details?

Only the registered provider we match you with. If they can't help, we pass your details to another registered provider, one at a time, up to 3 in total. Nobody else gets them for their own marketing.

Can I change my mind?

Yes. Email hello@psychosocialrecoverycoach.com.au and we'll stop passing your details on and let any provider we've introduced you to know.

Do you ask about my diagnosis?

No. We only ask practical questions, like what you'd like help with and what's in your plan. The provider will talk with you directly about anything else.

For Support Coordinators and Providers

Can I refer a participant?

Yes. Use the referral form. Please check the participant, or their nominee, agrees to the referral first. We'll let you know who's picking it up.

I'm a recovery coaching provider. Can I join?

If you're registered with the NDIS Commission and your recovery coaches have capacity, register your interest on the providers page and we'll be in touch.
